January Wrap Up…

Welcome to my January Wrap Up. I didn’t have a great reading month, finishing 4 books (3 books off my TBR). I also received 2 ARC’s this month.

I have reviews up or coming up for these books so as usual this is just going to be a brief rundown on each book I read.

Without further ado, let’s get into my January Wrap Up:

Little Bird Of Auschwitz by Alina and Jacques Peretti: This book was fascinating. As it takes place during World War II it shouldn’t surprise anyone that it is at times emotional and difficult to read. It was also written during COVID Lockdowns by Jacques Peretti as Alina; his Mum, deteriorates from dementia. In saying that, there is a lot of love and hope in this book. I haven’t read a book about someone’s experiences in Warsaw during the uprising, In Auschwitz during the final days of the war, and in Lodz in the after-war years governed by the Soviet Union, so I was captivated by this book and didn’t want to put it down. This is a must-read book for everyone.

I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys: This book was amazing. I am a massive fan of Ruta Sepetys so I went into this book with high expectations. I am happy to say I not only lived up to my expectations; it well and truly surpassed them. I had read a lot of Historical Fictions books over the years but this is the first book I have read that explores Romanian under Communist rule. The setting and situations were heartbreaking and Ruta Sepetys did a fantastic job creating human characters that were able to convey the emotion of this time period. I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about this book and now that I have an understanding of what was going on In Romania I am definitely going to research it more.

The Paris Bookseller by Kerri Maher: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had everything I could have asked for; amazing writing, a fantastic story, awesome characters, books, and it’s based on true events. I loved that this book spanned such a long time as it allowed the characters to grow in an authentic way are the story unfolded and time passed. I also loved that this story featured so many amazing authors and books as integral elements to the plot. This book is an absolute must read for all bookworms.

Mirror Mirror by Jen Calonita: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I love Disney and my Snow White is my Mum’s favourite so I grew up reading Snow White. I loved that this book kept the heart and soul of Snow White while twisting the story. I loved the new characters and I loved how strong Snow White was in this story. Jen Calonita has done a great job with this book and I am excited to read more by her in the near future.

That’s it for my January Wrap Up. I hope you all had a great reading month. Let me know what you guys read this month in the comments section.

Until my February Wrap Up…

Happy Reading…

Love Conquers Fear – A Short Story!

Welcome to another Sunday Session. I recently wrote a short story as part of a University Assessment and since I actually liked it, I decided to share it with you today.

Love Conquers Fear

As Rebecca had lain in Matthew’s arms, she’d known there was nowhere else she ever wanted to be. She had been drifting back to sleep when there was a knock at the door. She’d sprung up in bed and turned to Matthew “who’s at the door?” she’d asked.

Looking at his doorbell camera Matthew had replied “relax, it’s just my cousin”

“Which one?”

“Lily”

“Does she know about us?” Rebecca asked nervously

“Would it be so bad if she did?” questioned Matthew

“Yes!” Rebecca replied, regretting it instantly.

Back in her apartment, she had replayed the moment in her head a million times yet Rebecca hadn’t known how to fix it. She hadn’t seen or heard from Matthew in three weeks. How was she supposed to explain to Matthew that she wasn’t embarrassed by him she was afraid. Did he not remember what happened the last time they dated? She couldn’t forget. As she stared at her phone trying to compose a text the memories flood her mind.

They had been in the cabin; their secret meeting place for the last year or so. Rebecca was putting her shoes on when the door smashed open. When their eyes had adjusted to the bright sunlight streaming in, they realized it was Rebecca’s father standing in the doorway. Her father had lunged at her but Matthew stepped in front of her. After her initial shock she joined the fight with Matthew but even working together they were no match for her father. Her father tossed her against the wall like she was a rag doll and the last thing she heard before losing consciousness was Matthew yelling in pain.

When she’d come to she was locked in her bedroom broken and bruised with no idea what had happened to Matthew. She’d spent the next week thinking her father had killed him; finally, she had overheard her brother’s talking about how Matthew had gotten bashed at the rodeo so she had at least known he was still alive. Once her injuries had healed enough for her to go outside she’d finally gotten to see him with her own eyes. Her heart broke a little when she saw him and the damage her father had inflicted but he refused to be fussed over, he had just wanted to move on.

They had never talked about what had happened that night but things had been different between them ever since. Matthew was angry; she could blame him, he’d started getting into fights, and drinking. Rebecca had thought that if they could just leave town things would get better, so she had mentioned it to Matthew; surprisingly, he agreed, they had started planning that night. They had decided that they would leave on the first bus out of town the day after her 18th birthday, she would be an adult and they already knew where they were going to college.

As she’d stood out of the rain waiting for both Matthew and the bus that would have given them a fresh start her Nokia beeped. Matthew wasn’t coming, he couldn’t leave his cousins; they were all he had. While she had understood why he was staying she’s known that she couldn’t stay. So when the bus pulled up she had boarded. As she finally exited the town limits she’s messaged him back, tears streaming down her cheeks; I love you, but I can’t stay.

Standing in her apartment, the phone in her hand was no longer a Nokia; she was no longer a scared 18 year old. She knew what she’d have to do. If she and Matthew were ever going to have a future together they needed to talk, really talk. It was a Friday night so she’s known Matthew, as well as the rest of the town, would be at the High School watching the game. That was where she needed to be.

The game was packed but Rebecca had known where Matthew would be. As she had expected, he was sitting in the back of his truck at the southern end of the field. After taking a deep breath, Rebecca walked towards Matthew, and hopefully her future. She had known he would be surprised to see her so she didn’t waste any time in getting what she wanted to say out. For his part, he let her speak without interrupting her. And by the time she had said everything she wanted to say the game was over and the car park was emptying.

They sat in Matthews’s truck for the rest night, finally talking. Nothing was held back. From the hurt and anger to the laughter and tears, everything was out in the open. As Rebecca had hoped, Matthew wanted the same things she did. This time they weren’t going to hide their relationship. While Rebecca still feared her father, she and Matthew weren’t going to let him push them apart again. This time things would be different, she just knew it.

Rebecca and Matthew’s relationship grew stronger every day. Her father; as expected, tried to create problems but as Matthew had said that night in his truck; they weren’t kids anymore, he had no power over them. As it turned out, standing up to her father gave one of her brother’s the strength to do the same. S not only did she get back the love of her life, but she also got her brother back too, and she won’t ever give up hope that she will one day have a relationship with her other brother as well. Think of her brother made her think about her upcoming wedding. As she looked at her engagement ring Rebecca wondered what the future had in store for her and Matthew.

Rebecca is jolted from her memories by the sound of her son’s crying. She looks out the back window to see Matthew comforting their boy, calming whispers soothing his fear. As if on cue his baby sister starts to cry. As Rebecca soothes her daughter and Matthew comforts their son, Rebecca realizes that love conquers fear.

That’s it from me today. I hope you enjoyed my short story. I will catch you all next week for another Sunday Session.

Happy Reading.

Little Bird Of Auschwitz by Alina and Jacques Peretti

‘My son Jacques is telling my story. I always wanted to tell it myself but never could. Maybe my English wasn’t good enough. I never had the courage. I never imagined for a second it would be written down.’

As a reporter, Jacques Peretti has spent his life investigating important stories. But there was one story, heard in scattered fragments throughout his childhood, that he never thought to investigate. The story of how his mother survived Auschwitz.

In the few last months of the War, thirteen-year-old Alina Peretti, along with her mother and sister, was one of thirteen thousand non-Jewish Poles sent to Auschwitz, in the wake of the Warsaw Uprising. Her experiences there, which she rarely discussed, cast a shadow over the rest of her life.

Now ninety, Alina has been diagnosed with dementia. Together, mother and son begin a race against time to record her memories and preserve her family’s story. For the first time, Alina recalls her experiences as a child during the Second World War, the horrors that she witnessed in Auschwitz, and the miraculous story of how she survived a firing squad.

Along the way, Jacques learns long-hidden secrets about his mother’s family; his mysterious grandfather who lived a double-life, his grandmother who read tarot cards in a Soviet labour camp, and his aunt and uncles, whose fate he never knew. He also gains an understanding of his mother through retracing her past, learning more about the woman who would never let him call her ‘Mum’.”

This book was fascinating.

I went into this book believing I knew what I was getting, but I was very wrong. Most books I have read about WWII either focus on soldiers and the battles or civilians in the lead-up to and duration of the war. This book covers the lead-up to the war, the terror of living through the war in various places in Europe, the Warsaw uprising, Auschwitz, the collapse of the Third Reich, and the years after the war in the USSR. With so many horrific moments explored it wasn’t surprising that this book was difficult to read at times.

Jacques Peretti did a fantastic job capturing the tragedies of the time and the heartbreak that his Mum and her family faced while still highlighting the brighter moments of their lives and experiences. The way he was able to convey the emotions of both the heartwarming and heartbreaking situations in a way that was real and utter human-made for a truly emotional reading experience.

The only aspect of this book that I had trouble connecting with was the conversations that were included between Alina and Jacques that appear sporadically throughout the story. While I understand why these conversations were included I didn’t like the way they slowed the pace of this book down. As the story was unfolding at such a fast pace I found it quite jarring when the story stopped so that these snippets could be added.

This is one of those books that made me both laugh and cry and I am so glad that I read it. I am now looking forward to learning more about various moments that occurred both during and after WWII that were brought to my attention in this book.

Little Bird Of Auschwitz by Alina and Jacques Peretti is a must-read for everyone.

The Paris Bookseller by Kerri Maher

‘PARIS, 1919.

Young, bookish Sylvia Beach knows there is no greater city in the world than Paris. But when she opens an English-language bookshop on the bohemian Left Bank, Sylvia can’t yet know she is making history.

Many leading writers of the day, from Ernest Hemingway to Gertrude Stein, consider Shakespeare and Company a second home. Here some of the most profound literary friendships blossom – and none more so than between James Joyce and Sylvia herself.

When Joyce’s controversial novel Ulysses is banned, Sylvia determines to publish it through Shakespeare and Company. But the success and notoriety of publishing the most infamous book of the century comes at a deep personal cost as Sylvia risks ruin, reputation, and her heart in the name of the life-changing power of books…’

This book was wonderful.

As a massive bookworm, as soon as I read the synopsis for this book I knew I had to have it. Thankfully it not only lived up to my high expectations it well and truly surpassed them.

I loved that this book is based on true events and the setting of this book; a bookstore and lending library in Paris was some that I didn’t know I needed to read about until I picked up this book.

This book was filled with amazing literary personalities, stories, and amazing books that I was thoroughly captivated by. Reading about these amazing authors whose books are so treasured made for a truly wonderful reading experience.

This is the first time I have read anything by Kerri Maher but after reading this book it definitely won’t be the last. Her writing is absolutely beautiful and the way she created flawed, human characters that emotions radiated off the pages was utter breathtaking.

If you haven’t picked this book up I recommend you get yourself a copy as soon as possible.

The Paris Bookseller by Kerri Maher is a must read for all bookworms.

Little Monsters by David Walliams

‘Howler is a little werewolf with a big problem…he is just not scary! And that makes him the odd one out at Monster School. But when Howler finds some new friends, he discovers that being the odd one out might just make him the coolest one of all…

Children will howl with laughter in reading this monstrously funny picture book, which celebrates individuality and finding your own voice.’

This book was awesome.

I am a massive fan of David Walliams so I was very excited to get my hands on this book. I am happy to say that this book not only lived up to my high expectations it well and truly surpassed them.

One of the things I adore about David Walliams’ books is his ability to create wonderful characters that learn something about themselves or life as the story unfolds. This book has a beautiful message for young readers about being yourself and finding your people while still being funny and engaging.

I loved that this book had a Halloween setting, I haven’t read many books set on Halloween, and the way that this story incorporated it into this story was really clever. On top of the setting, the dialog and story itself were heartwarming and thoroughly entertaining. I started and finished this book with a smile on my face.

Adding to David Walliams’ amazing story are the bright and bold illustrations by Adam Stower. The way in which Adam Stower’s illustrations perfectly complimented David Walliams’ story added an extra layer to this awesome book.

I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about this book. If you have a young reader in your life you should get them a copy of this phenomenal book.

Little Monsters by David Walliams is a must-have for all young readers and their families.

The Little Prince by Louise Greig

‘Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s tender and magical classic fable adapted for picture book readers for the very first time!

“Please – draw me a sheep.”

I blinked.

The voice belonged to a charming little prince.

The characters of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s classic tale have captured the hearts of generations of readers. Meet the pilot stranded in the desert. Meet the Little Prince who tends his beautiful rose on a planet of his own. Follow him as he embarks on a strange and wonderful journey to puzzling new planets and finally to Earth, where he discovers the nature of love.’

This book was stunning.

As a fan of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince, I knew as soon as I saw this book that I had to have it. I am very happy to say it was everything I had hoped it would be and so much more.

There is a reason why The Little Prince is such a well-loved story, and Louise Greig has done a fantastic job in highlighting the magic of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s original story. The magic, awe, joy, and emotion of the original book all radiate from the pages of this wonderful little book.

Louise Greig has done an amazing job in condensing Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s story for a whole new generation of young readers and their families to enjoy without losing any of the elements that make The Little Prince so adored.

Adding an extra layer to this fabulous book are the utterly stunning Illustrations by Sarah Massini. The way in which Sarah Massini’s illustrations perfectly compliments the story being told was truly beautiful. After I finished reading this book I immediately went back to the beginning just so I could go through it again and study the phenomenal illustrations.

I honestly don’t have a bad word to say about this book and I am so happy to have it on my bookshelf.

The Little Prince by Louise Greig is a must-have for all book lovers.

Raging Waters – A Screenplay!

Welcome to another Sunday Session. I recently wrote a short film screenplay as part of a University Assessment and since I actually liked it, I decided to share it with you today.

Raging Waters!

FADE IN:

EXT: Life Raft – Morning

REBECCA sorts through the supplies while ROBBY sleeps.

ROBBY wakes.

ROBBY

How bad is it?

Rebecca looks up from the supplies.

REBECCA

We have 3 liters of water, 7 power bars, 1 chocolate bar, and 1 flare.

ROBBY

OK.

BEAT

So how long will that last? Is anyone even looking for us? What about sharks? OMG are there sharks in these waters?

REBECCA

Calm down, there are no sharks in these waters. We only hired the boat for three days so if no one has found us by then someone will start looking when we don’t return.

ROBBY

Three days. How are we going to survive three days?

REBECCA

Half a liter of water a day, one power bar each a day, and a piece of chocolate. We have enough food and water to last.

ROBBY

Unless we burn to death in this bloody sun.

REBECCA

HMM…

Beat

The sun is a problem.

Take your shirt off.

Rebecca starts to take off her shirt.

Robby stares at her.

ROBBY

No!

REBECCA

Do it now. If we tie our shirts together we can cover over part of the raft and lay under it during the day to protect ourselves from the sun.

ROBBY

Fine

Robby removes his shirt.

Rebecca ties the shirt together to make a shelter.

REBECCA

Now. Put sunscreen on the parts of your skin that will be in the sun and get undercover.

CUT TO:

EXT – Afternoon – 4 Days Later

Rebecca sees the Coast Guard boat in the distance and fires the flare.

REBECCA

Thank God. If I had to spend another hour with you I would have killed you.

ROBBY

Just get me out of this bloody raft.

REBECCA

For the record, we are so over.

ROBBY – Mumbles

Whatever

FADE OUT:

That’s it from me today. I hope you enjoyed my little screenplay. I will catch you all next week for another Sunday Session.

Happy Reading.
